One Rivalry, One Table

by on Dec.29, 2009, under diy

Table tennis isn’t our exclusive contention. My first cousin and me are always combative… maybe too competitive. It could be as little as who could consume food faster or eat a higher quantity… who could consume food slower or less. It did not matter. If there was a way one individual could trump the other in something, we would contend.

Unfortunately, the tiny abode my wife and I bought doesn’t have a lot of space for the many means my cousin and I like to compete. After much calculation, we finally set on a pool table with a Stiga table tennis conversion top. Fundamentally this gives us the capacity to enjoy either billiards or ping pong on one table in the same room.

So now our notorious rivalry continues. Of course, he invariably kvetches that it is not the true thing. Even though he ordinarily bests me in pool, every single instance we set the table tennis conversion top upon the billiard table, it seems his game drifts.

To put it plainly, I think it’s because I’m just plain the greater ping-pong player. But unfortunately, he has too numerous rationalizations. The height isn’t right. The proportions are off. The list proceeds on. So I procured the measuring tape. The height and proportions are spot on to the official table tennis dimensions. Then he claimed the table had the incorrect bounce; that somehow the pool table beneath affected the speed and height of the ball bounce.

So we researched the official bounce measurement (yes, there’s an official bounce measurement). It is for each 30 cm of drop, there ought to be a 23 centimeters bounce. We tested the bounce in over a dozen placements on the conversion top. In each spot the ball bounced almost perfectly straight up and nearly exactly 23 centimeters high. So you realize, table tennis conversion tops do a perfectly respectable job replicating a strong game of ping pong. And my first cousin has no excuses. I am just the superior ping pong player.
